PART 2 – EMBARKING ON YOUR MATERNITY PHOTOSHOOT AT ABC PHOTOGRAPHY

2.1. Why You Should Consider A Maternity Photoshoot

Between your weight gain, morning sickness, and swollen feet, it can be challenging to see the beautiful side of pregnancy. As an expecting mother going through these trials yourself, it can seem like a time to forget rather than memorialise. But as time passes, you may find yourself uttering, “I miss being pregnant.”.

So, instead of hiding your body behind loose, ill-fitting clothes, why not embrace your changing body and proudly display them for your family to see by documenting your life-changing journey through a maternity photoshoot? When you see how beautiful you look with your baby bump, you are sure to smile. If you are still on the fence about this decision, these reasons may compel you to change your mind.

Reason #1: Enhance the Connection Between You and Your Spouse

Your pregnancy should be a shared experience between you and your spouse, an opportunity to celebrate and connect on a deeper level while reflecting on the journey that both of you have undertaken – morphing from a couple into a family. Our maternity photographer can capture this essential milestone in your relationship, preserving it for a lifetime.

A maternity photoshoot is also a great way for the father to form a deep attachment with the newborn. Unlike women, who experience a bond with their babies in utero, men don’t experience pregnancy in the same way as their spouses. In fact, many often don’t build a connection with their child until they start interacting with them after birth. This photoshoot can provide your partner with an excellent opportunity to develop his relationship with his child.

Reason #2: You Will Feel Beautiful And Empowered

Despite what others say about your pregnancy glow, you might not feel especially beautiful when your body is undergoing a physical transformation, particularly when you have the urge to eat everything in sight and your clothes don’t fit anymore. In fact, you may find yourself being self-conscious about your image during this period.

Let us help change this line of thinking. Under the guidance of our experienced photographer, and complemented with the right wardrobe, we can bring your growing bump to the forefront and capture the radiant glow unique to expecting mothers, empowering you to reclaim the beauty of pregnancy and motherhood. After seeing these photos, you will soon change your mind and be filled with pride at how beautiful you look.

Reason #3: You Will Treasure These Photos For Years To Come

While you might find it hard to believe now, you may find yourself missing your baby bump when you look back on this special, yet fleeting, chapter of your life. A maternity photoshoot can enable you to freeze this special moment, creating a lasting memory you can revisit and share with your family as often as you like. Your children will enjoy seeing how gorgeous you look while pregnant with them.

2.2. Creative Ideas For Your Maternity Photoshoot

During pregnancy, your body is undergoing a remarkable change to protect and nurture your little one. It is only fitting to document this wonderful journey with endearing photographs that you and your family will cherish for life. To elevate your maternity photoshoot into something truly special and reflective of your personality, here are several top-notch ideas to consider.

Idea #1: Play With Silhouette

Do you want to proudly display your baby bump without revealing too much? In that case, you can consider utilising natural lighting to create stunning silhouettes highlighting the contours of your pregnant belly. This technique strikes the ideal balance between concealing and revealing, preserving a sense of mystery while capturing the ethereal beauty of pregnancy.

Feel free to experiment with different angles and poses to evoke captivating and artistic silhouettes. If you are shooting in a photo studio with minimal access to natural lighting, fret not! You can use artificial backlit lighting to achieve the desired effect. This style is perfect for those who feel uncomfortable when being photographed.

Idea #2: Consider Outdoor Photography

An outdoor photoshoot will almost always result in fantastic photos. After all, few things beat natural lighting in providing your photos with bright hues and stunning details. A picturesque background serves as the cherry on top, ensuring you need no other elements to complete the portrait. If you are unsure where to take the pictures, consider locations that hold significance to you and your partners, such as a favourite park or a scenic beach.

Idea #3: Get The Older Sibling In On The Act

Celebrate togetherness by getting the older sibling in on the act to create a heartwarming and memorable family portrait. Your first child is going to feel so special to be included in the photoshoot as they commemorate becoming an older brother or sister. Who knows? Getting their participation may make them anticipate their new role even more!

Idea #4: Use A Prop

To add a new dimension or more meaning to your photoshoot, why not consider including a prop or two? Ideally, something that holds significant meaning to you and your spouse to add a personal touch and tell a story. Baby clothes, baby shoes, or ultrasound images are all perfect objects to represent your journey to parenthood.

You and your partner can also include props related to your interests or hobbies to showcase each other’s unique personalities. Do not hesitate to discuss your ideas with our photographer, who can work with you to create meaningful and visually captivating compositions. However, limit yourself to two related props to avoid taking the limelight away from your baby bump.

Idea #5: Don’t Be Afraid To Be Casual

At the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with a simple and casual photoshoot. That means no dressing up, no specific background setup, and no additional elements. It is just you and your baby bump. That is all that truly matters!

Additionally, don’t be afraid to let your candid side shine through. Capturing the natural interactions, genuine emotions, and tender moments arising from your baby’s arrival will have you looking back on your pregnancy with fondness.

2.3. How To Prepare For Your Maternity Photoshoot

Are you feeling excited and nervous about your upcoming maternity photoshoot? Don't worry! That is natural. After all, you want the pictures to turn out perfect. However, being anxious is hardly the ideal way to prep for a photoshoot. Let us share what you can do to feel vibrant and relaxed for your big day.

Tip #1: Plan Ahead

We recommend planning and scheduling your photoshoot early, especially if you have a specific photographer you want to work with. Ideally, you should book a session with us when you are about 20 weeks pregnant, around the time you find out the baby’s gender. Doing so will give us plenty of time to schedule a session in your third trimester, between 29 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

That is the ideal time for a maternity photoshoot, as your baby bump will look great, and you will still be able to move around and pose for photos comfortably. While you can have the session later in your pregnancy, there is a good chance you may have difficulty posing and standing for long periods.

Tip #2: Discuss Your Ideas With Our Photographer

We understand that no two mothers are the same and everyone has different requirements. So, if there are specific images you want or don’t want, feel free to let our photographer know. Let us know what is crucial to you and what you are comfortable with before your session so we can better plan what shots and poses to do. We can work with your vision to ensure the photos turn out exactly as you hoped.

Tip #3: Consider Professional Makeup And Hairstyling

While you might incur additional expenses, hiring a professional makeup artist and hairstylist can ensure you look your best for your maternity photoshoot. Whether you prefer something casual or formal, the hairstylist will be able to recommend the ideal hairstyle. Likewise, a professional makeup artist will know how to do your makeup so that the results turn out well in the photos.

Fortunately, you need not search far for the ideal makeup artist and hairstylist. In addition to our photography services, we provide professional makeup and hairstyling for expectant mothers and fathers who signed up for our premium and luxury portraiture packages.

Tip #4: Consider A Professional Manicure

You may also want to consider pampering yourself with a professional manicure. After all, your hands are going to be appearing in almost all of the photos. So, you will want them to look good!

Tip #5: Get Plenty Of Rest Before Your Photoshoot

Given the excitement and nervousness you might feel about the session, it is understandable to find it challenging to achieve restful sleep in the days leading up to your maternity photoshoot. However, try to go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep if possible, particularly the night before the photoshoot. Doing so will ensure you feel refreshed and energised the next day while minimising the dark circles around your eyes.

Tip #6: Stay Hydrated And Don’t Skip Your Meals

Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water before and during your photoshoot to ensure your skin looks fresh. Even if you have a case of nerves before the session, remember to have a proper meal to help keep your energy up throughout the shoot.

2.4. What To Wear During Your Maternity Photoshoot

Your creative ideas for your photos are finalised, and everything is prepped for your photoshoot. Now, one more pressing question remains – what are you wearing for the maternity photoshoot?

Unless you plan on a casual shoot, what you would wear in your day-to-day life may not always be ideal for photos. That is an issue when you want to look your best for your maternity photoshoot. Well, no worries! Check out our dress tips to ensure you look stunning on the day of your photoshoot.

Tip #1: Consider A Maxi Dress

Do you want something comfortable yet flattering for the photoshoot? Look no further than a maxi dress. Its flowing fabric not only makes you feel at ease. It can also accentuate your pregnancy curves while camouflaging any ‘problem areas’, creating a flattering silhouette. In particular, ones with empire waistlines or wrap-style dresses can prominently showcase your baby bump while providing a graceful, feminine look.

Tip #2: Go For Body-Hugging Clothes

Nothing beats body-hugging clothes to show off those beautiful pregnancy curves. It is simple yet elegant, keeping the attention drawn to you and your baby bump.

Tip #3: Choose Attire With Solid Colours

The aim of your maternity photoshoot is to show off your beautiful tummy in the first place. So, wear colours that will show it off. That means avoiding dark colours, like black or navy, as they hide the bump and make it difficult to see. However, you don’t want bright neon colours, either.

Instead, light to medium hues work best. Ideally, they should complement your skin tone and reflect your personal style. For instance, earthy tones or soft pastels can add a pop of colour, creating visual interest in your photos. We also recommend simple, solid colours, as they draw attention to your tummy and accentuate your bump the most.

Tip #4: Bare Your Baby Bump

If you feel comfortable showing off your bare tummy, consider wearing a crop top or a shirt with the lower buttons undone and matching denims to highlight the shape of your bump. A solid, coloured tube and matching bottom also work great for this type of photo.

Tip #5: Be Modest

Some believe they look most beautiful when they feel confident and comfortable with themselves. If you feel the same way, consider modest wear that evokes such feelings during your photoshoot. No doubt your photos will reflect that pregnancy glow too!

The last thing you want is to stress out over your photoshoot. So, if you are at your wit’s end and unsure what to wear, fret not! You can select from an extensive range of maternity gowns in our studio. Depending on your package, we also provide a suit for your spouse (studio photoshoot only). Feel free to enquire about our selection of fabrics and what is available based on your photoshoot package.
